Debunking A Common SPF Roofing Myth!

When it comes to using Spray Polyurethane Foam or SPF roofing you will hear a lot of different opinions on the subject. A lot of times people are unaware of what a SPF roofing system is and others have heard one negative thing about it and decided it wasn’t what they wanted.

Today, we are going to be your roofing “mythbusters” and discuss one of the most common myths about SPF roofing systems.

SPF ROOFING MYTH: You can’t walk on it, because it can’t withstand the weight.

In our personal experiences we have seen evidence that the above statement is quite false. First of all, we do walk on the SPF roofing system once it is installed. How would we get down off of the roof otherwise?

Ok, so maybe that was too easy. You’re probably thinking you’d like to see some cold, hard facts instead of our personal experiences.

Alright! Here it goes…

SPF ROOFING FACT: You can walk on the roof, because it can handle the pressure.

In fact, a little research will tell you that SPF has been used as a roofing and insulation material for over 45 years. During that time, foam roofing systems have proven themselves to be dependable, long lasting, and very affordable.

All the way back in the middle of the 1990’s the National Roofing Foundation (NRF) conducted a series of tests involving SPF roofing systems. The study included results from 4 different climates, 140 roofs with SPF roofing systems and different roof conditions.

Based on findings of the study, high compressive strengths and core densities were seen in old SPF roofing systems just as they were in the newer ones. Imagine the pressure a roof takes on through weather, walking on it, etc. The testing on old roofs was a smart move for NRF, because it proves the endurance of SPF roofing systems is real!

Since then studies for closed-cell SPF roofing systems have also proven that the roofs covered in SPF can take on 2,000 pounds worth of resistance and we seriously doubt any person is stepping with that much force.
